Michael began his impressive career in the Qualified Plan industry working for an independent TPA/Record Keeper, giving him invaluable insight which he would later leverage into the advisory side of the financial industry. His list of distinctions includes Qualified Plan Financial Consultant (QPFC) through the American Society of Pension Professionals and Actuaries (ASPPA) and Accredited Investment Fiduciary Analyst (AIFA) through Fi360. Michael is a Series 65 licensed Investment Advisor Representative for Smart Investor (SI).

In 2008, Michael joined SI’s parent company, Sloy, Dahl & Holst (SDH). SDH is a boutique investment advisory firm, based in Portland, Oregon. He is credited with revamping SDH’s Qualified Plan practice, and growing that portion of the overall business by more than 400% in 10 years. He developed and implemented SDH’s 401(k) one-on-one participant education program, in an effort to truly impact the financial health of all participants within Qualified Plans managed by SDH.  Michael was also the architect of SDH’s Collective Investment Funds, established in 2016, which brought purchasing power and fee reductions seldom seen in the “Small Plan Market” to all of SDH’s Plans and participants.

Named as SDH’s new Chief Operating Officer and seeking diversification for the overall business, Michael led the acquisition of Smart Investor (SI) in 2016. Particularly drawn to SI’s investment philosophy, centered around Dimensional Fund Advisors’ academic approach, he knew it would present a perfect complement to SD&H’s traditional approach. Two subsequent acquisitions, both during 2018, and SI has quickly doubled its total assets under management in less than 2 years. Today Michael serves as SI’s President and Chief Operating Officer, overseeing operations at both SI and SDH.

Michael has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics, from the University of Washington. He has served on Charles Schwab’s National Trust and Custody Board, and is also a former board member of the ASPPA Benefits Council of the Great Northwest. Passionate about his community and child education, Michael served on the Investment Committee of Kindering; Washington state based nonprofit. Michael resides in Kirkland, Washington with his wife Brittany, and their daughters Sienna and Charlotte.

Allan Henriques, ESQ is a Registered Financial Consultant (RFC), Accredited Investment Fiduciary Analyst (AIFA®) and Fiduciary Education For Endowments (FEFE) certified. Since founding Smart Investor (SI) nearly twenty years ago, Allan focused on building a world-class Registered Investment Advisory (RIA) firm based on the hallmark of personalized client service and unequaled fiduciary advice. Since Sloy, Dahl, & Holst’s acquisition of SI in 2016, he continues to serve as Chairman of the Board.

Allan earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science from the University of California, Davis. He also earned his Juris Doctorate, Law Degree from the prestigious McGeorge School of Law, University of the Pacific. After practicing law for a number of years, Allan was drawn to the Investment Advisory industry, believing his legal beginnings gave him a unique and valuable perspective to serve a client base. For over 30 years, Allan has worked with individual and institutional clients nationwide, drawing upon his legal and financial experience to help clients meet their monetary objectives while legally reducing potential tax liabilities and protecting their estate values.

In 2013, his unwavering commitment to building the “Smart Investor Way” led him to pursue the firm’s Centre for Fiduciary Excellence (CEFEX) certification. This year marks our fifth year of CEFEX certification and our commitment to upholding the most stringent fiduciary standards in the industry.

As Allan steps away from the day-to-day management of SI, he leverages his more than 3 decades of Fiduciary Investment Advisory experience to offer unprecedented knowledge and insight on what it takes to be a prudent Investment Steward. In this role, Allan serves as a CEFEX Analyst teaching fiduciary education to investment stewards of non-profits, foundations and endowments. His goal is to help others better understand their fiduciary responsibilities, how to minimize risk and how to ensure proper due diligence is exercised by non-profit organizations.

Philanthropically minded, Allan is an avid supporter of local community organizations. Inspired by his father’s medical practices, Allan served on the board at Sutter Roseville Medical Center Foundation, a non-profit focusing on enhancing medical care for the community. Additionally, he is a strong advocate for the continued development of the Boys & Girls Club of Placer County, which offers single parents and others an after-school enrichment program for their children.

Aaron has nearly three decades experience working with clients in financial planning and insurance industries. During this time, Aaron has counseled hundreds of private clients, as well as retirement plan sponsors both large and small. He is particularly focused on investment management, risk management, tax planning, estate planning, and retirement income planning (including social security and Medicare) all areas that bring tremendous value to his clients.

Aaron earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration (Finance Concentration) from the California State University, Sacramento. His vast array of credentials includes Investment Advisor Representative (IAR), Certified Financial Planner (CFP), and FINRA Licenses 6, 7, 24, 63 and 65.

True to his Eagle Scout designation, Aaron has always had an affinity for all things outdoors. Having lived in Germany, he loves to travel with his family and experience international destinations. He enjoys tending his massive vegetable garden throughout all seasons, as well as playing soccer and hiking. Aaron and his wife are proud parents of six, and Aaron is very active with the Boy Scouts of America.

Tracy joined the Smart Investor team over sixteen years ago. Her core competency is in the retirement plan space. Helping people achieve their retirement goals is her passion. Her commitment to retirement plan participants extends into the private client space; she works with former 401(k) plan participants who want to continue investing using Smart Investor as their advisory firm.

In 2013, she received her Certified Financial Planner (CFP) designation— a goal she had since receiving her college degree in the 80s. Holistic financial education and financial planning help are hallmarks of what she brings to her participants and clients. Serving as liaison between plan sponsors and their complex plan documents, Tracy is committed to helping plan sponsors make better decisions for their retirement plans and their participants.

Tracy is dedicated to being a fiduciary and her clients always come first. She received her Accredited Investment Fiduciary (AIF®) designation in 2015 to better service Smart Investor clients as an Advisor. She also received her Accredited Investment Fiduciary Analyst (AIFA®) designation in 2016 so she could maintain the firm’s fiduciary standards and perform our annual Centre for Fiduciary Excellence (CEFEX) certification. She earned a Bachelor degree in Business Administration from the California State University, Chico.

In her free time, she loves to challenge herself with new goals and adventures, and spend time with family. She loves to hike the canyon by her home in Auburn, California and play with her two dogs— Athena & Rowdy. She is a continuous learner and a long-standing member of The Roseville Communicators, a local Toastmasters group.

I am constantly envisioning ways to make our clients lives better; whether through intricate financial planning, streamlined technologies, or improved internal processes, I am driven from my core to continually enhance the client experience.

The financial services industry was a natural fit for Maddy as it leverages her love of math, problem solving and passion for helping others. Straight out of college she joined Morgan Stanley in Menlo Park, and worked for one of the largest advisors in the nation. There she worked directly with ultra-high net worth clients and the financial complexities that accompany them. She executed high-volume trades, managed syndicate offerings, wrote and executed 10b5-1 plans, worked with employee stock options, as well as venture capital and alternative investment deals.

Looking to delve further into a more holistic financial planning firm, she later joined Sand Hill Global Advisors (SHGA) in Palo Alto where she managed the client services team. During her tenure with SHGA, she led several internal large-scale complex technological transitions. In her role at SHGA she also worked directly with clients and advisors to provide comprehensive financial planning that address a myriad of life circumstances to include education, charitable planning, divorce, estate distribution, social security and Medicare.

Relocating to the Roseville area, Maddy brought her talents to Smart Investor in 2020. Here she directs the client service team and continually perfects operational efficiencies while leveraging current technologies. She strives to proactively anticipate client needs and provide the best possible client experience.

Maddy has a Bachelor of Science degree from the UC Berkeley Haas School of Business. Her credentials include the Certified Financial Planner (CFP®), as well as FINRA licenses 65, 7, and 66.

When Maddy is not in the office, she can be found outdoors, hiking or swimming with her husband and son.

Passion for supporting our “Wall Street” team. There is no such thing as “no” – there is always a way to support our clients’ quest to achieve their investment dreams, even through internal operations.

After managing a doctors’ office in Silicon Valley, Leslie spent a decade working for The Marcus & Millichap Company – the largest privately held, diversified commercial real estate and residential development firm in the United States. As Vice President of Administration, she was responsible for human resources, facility management, project management, and operations of the corporate headquarters office of 100 employees.

Her family relocated to the Sacramento foothills in 2001, seeking an old-fashioned sense of community and connectedness for her son to experience growing up. After a hiatus from the corporate world in order to raise her son, she returned to the administrative field supporting a local franchisee until their retirement. In 2018 Leslie joined the Smart Investor team and leverages her vast knowledge and skills managing the company’s financial and corporate infrastructure.

Leslie earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Management from UC Irvine/Menlo College, Summa Cum Laude, and is a commissioned California Notary Public. She is passionate about supporting music education for local elementary and high school students and dedicates a great deal of her free time serving as President Emeritus of Placer High School Music Boosters. She also serves on the Executive Board of the Auburn Civic Symphony. She is a columnist for the Auburn Journal, and former Board Member of Menlo College, Professional Studies Program.

My greatest reward as a Client Services Associate is the relationship I have built with our clients, allowing me to have a unique understanding of their needs and the ability to answer questions almost before they have finished asking. Making our client’s lives a little easier is my goal!

An industry veteran, Luann brings more than 30 years of professional knowledge and skill to her role as Client Services Associate. Luann oversees the establishment and maintenance of client accounts. She serves as the strategic liaison between clients and custodians, and facilitates the client on-boarding processes. She also takes the lead in setting up accounts, preparing for client reviews and processing distributions and transfers. She takes pride in managing SI’s reporting platform systems, maintaining accurate client information and preparation through distribution of SI’s quarterly reports.

A resident of Roseville, Luann enjoys spending time with her two grown sons and their families, most especially her two grandsons.

I love that clients become friends. When you work with a client for many years, you learn about each other’s lives— vacations, challenges, illnesses, new jobs, successes and retirement. My days are client centered as I assist by solving problems, answering questions and giving account service.

The administrative key to the Smart Investor Woodland office for over 10 years, Lesley prides herself in everyday problem solving and stellar client service. She began her career after college, by working in Product Research and Development for a pharmaceutical company.

After many years as a full time mother, she returned to the workforce as Aaron’s assistant, and loves it. She is dedicated to helping Smart Investor provide unparalleled customer service. Her days are filled with on-boarding new clients, managing client accounts, preparing for client reviews, processing distributions and transfers, and a myriad of other administrative tasks in support of clients’ needs.

Lesley is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin with a degree in Bacteriology. She and her husband Alex are the proud parents of four daughters (and surprised they are old enough to have three grandchildren). Besides spending time with family, Lesley loves outdoor activities: swimming, cycling, hiking, camping, backpacking and a daily evening walk with her mother who has Alzheimer’s.

Lesley is committed to community service through her volunteer work with local organizations. These include being Cub Scout Den Leader for 10 years, Board member of a local sports club, Soccer Team Manager and working as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) for Foster children. In her few moments of down time, she enjoys reading, chatting with her husband and knitting socks.
