Smart Investor helps clients retire well. We combine evidence-based investing with good old hard work, and wrap it all together with an unwavering passion for client service. The result is a client base who understands why they’re doing what they’re doing, and most importantly where they’re going. Bottom line; it works really well.
Michael began his impressive career in the Qualified Plan industry working for an independent TPA/Record Keeper, giving him invaluable insight which he would later leverage into the advisory side of the financial industry. His list of distinctions includes Qualified Plan Financial Consultant (QPFC) through the American Society of Pension Professionals and Actuaries (ASPPA) and Accredited Investment Fiduciary Analyst (AIFA) through Fi360. Michael is a Series 65 licensed Investment Advisor Representative for Smart Investor (SI).
In 2008, Michael joined SI’s parent company, Sloy, Dahl & Holst (SD&H). SD&H is a boutique investment advisory firm, based in Portland, Oregon. He is credited with revamping SD&H’s Qualified Plan practice, and growing that portion of the overall business by more than 400% in 10 years. He developed and implemented SD&H’s 401(k) one-on-one participant education program, in an effort to truly impact the financial health of all participants within Qualified Plans managed by SD&H. Michael was also the architect of SD&H’s Collective Investment Funds, established in 2016, which brought purchasing power and fee reductions seldom seen in the “Small Plan Market” to all of SD&H’s Plans and participants.
Named as SD&H’s new Chief Operating Officer and seeking diversification for the overall business, Michael led the acquisition of Smart Investor (SI) in 2016. Particularly drawn to SI’s investment philosophy, centered around Dimensional Fund Advisors’ academic approach, he knew it would present a perfect complement to SD&H’s traditional approach. Two subsequent acquisitions, both during 2018, and SI has quickly doubled its total assets under management in less than 2 years. Today Michael serves as SI’s President and Chief Operating Officer, and oversees operations of both SI and SD&H.
Michael has a BA degree in Economics, from the University of Washington. He serves on Charles Schwab’s National Trust and Custody Board, as of 2017, and formerly sat on the ASPPA Benefits Council of the Great Northwest. He resides in Kirkland, Washington, with his wife Brittany, and their daughters Sienna and Charlotte. Even with his extremely full schedule, Michael finds time to dedicate to local philanthropy through his service on the Investment Committee of Kindering; Washington state based nonprofit, whose mission is to provide life-changing early intervention therapies and special education to infants and toddlers with an array of developmental disabilities, delays and other risk factors.
You’d be surprised to know that Michael has completed 4 Half-Ironman competitions.
Rachel Freeman Rachel Freeman IAR Director of Advisory Services, Operations Manager Smart Investor Roseville Office915 Highland Pointe Drive Suite 250 Roseville California 95678
Every Smart Investor relationship is built on a strong foundation of trust and communication. As the Director of Advisory Services, I am driven to carry this philosophy on to the next generation of our Advisory team by providing excellent Fiduciary advice and transparency to all of our clients.
Leveraging her passion for art, aptitude for technology, and unparalleled customer service, Rachel leads the SI Advisory team with one objective in mind: do what is best for the clients. Her dynamic customer service skills were honed during her early days at Apple, Inc.— the fastest growing retailer in history.
Since 2016, Rachel has worked side-by-side with Founder and Chairman of the Board, Allan Henriques, to learn the “Smart Investor Way” from its inventor. While her initial drive was to learn the Investment Advisory industry from the ground up, she quickly became inspired by SI’s client base as she systematically absorbed every detail of their financial lives. Focused on preserving the original SI team legacy, Rachel is uniquely prepared to improve SI’s processes and to continue improving the clients’ journey to achieve financial and retirement goals.
Rachel earned her dual Bachelor of Arts degrees in Music Performance (Jazz Trumpet) and Music Education (Trumpet Pedagogy) from California State University, Sacramento. She holds her FINRA license Series 65, and is an Investment Advisor Representative (IAR).
An avid golfer and dog lover, Rachel resides in Sacramento with her wife, Torre, and their Vizsla, Harriet. A teacher at heart, you will find her devoting her personal time to teaching an occasional trumpet sectional at a local middle or high school, or helping a colleague improve their golf swing. Rachel and Torre also devote time to the loving restoration of their turn-of-the century-fixer Craftsman farmhouse.
You’d be surprised to learn that Rachel plays trumpet in a local Math-Rock band that can be found performing all around Northern California.

Allan earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science from the University of California, Davis. He also earned his Juris Doctorate, Law Degree from the prestigious McGeorge School of Law, University of the Pacific. For over 30 years, Allan has worked with individual and institutional clients nationwide, drawing upon his legal and financial experience to help clients meet their monetary objectives while legally reducing potential tax liabilities and protecting their estate values.
In 2013, his unwavering commitment to building the “Smart Investor Way” led him to pursue the firm’s Centre for Fiduciary Excellence (CEFEX) certification. This year marks our fifth year of CEFEX certification and our commitment to upholding the most stringent fiduciary standards in the industry.
As Allan steps away from the day-to-day management of SI, he leverages his more than 3 decades of Fiduciary Investment Advisory experience to offer unprecedented knowledge and insight on what it takes to be a prudent Investment Steward. In this role, Allan serves as a CEFEX Analyst teaching fiduciary education to investment stewards of non-profits, foundations and endowments. His goal is to help others better understand their fiduciary responsibilities, how to minimize risk and how to ensure proper due diligence is exercised by non-profit organizations.
Philanthropically minded, Allan is an avid supporter of local community organizations. Inspired by his father’s medical practices, Allan served on the board at Sutter Roseville Medical Center Foundation, a non-profit focusing on enhancing medical care for the community. Additionally, he is a strong advocate for the continued development of the Boys & Girls Club of Placer County, which offers single parents and others an after-school enrichment program for their children.

Passion for supporting our ‘Wall Street’ team. There is no such thing as ‘no’— there is always a way to support our clients’ quest to achieve their investment dreams, even through internal operations.
After managing a doctors’ office in Silicon Valley, Leslie spent a decade working for The Marcus & Millichap Company— the largest privately held, diversified commercial real estate and residential development firm in the United States. As Vice President of Administration, she was responsible for human resources, facility management, project management, and operations of the corporate headquarter office housing 100 employees.
Her family relocated to the Sacramento foothills in 2001, seeking an old-fashioned sense of community and connectedness for her son to experience growing up. After a hiatus from the corporate world in order to raise her son, she returned to the administrative field supporting a local franchisee until their retirement. Now as a proud member of the Smart Investor team, she is driven to use her vast skills and knowledge to manage the company’s financial and corporate infrastructure.
Leslie earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Management from UC Irvine/Menlo College, Summa Cum Laude, and is a commissioned California Notary Public.
